The Critters are Taking Over

Several LaFayette Ridge neighbors are battling squirrels, chipmunks, and/or field mice in their attics and homes (this blogger included).

Ms. Emma recently had her home critter proofed by a local company specializing in pest control.

The Patty's trapped a suspected flying squirrel in their attic, but the little guy squeezed his way through the 1-inch hole in the live trap. He's still on the lam and munchin' on the Christmas decorations.

The Kidd's have placed a live trap in their front yard. Alvin traps the squirrels and releases them at nearby Black Shoals.

Here are some tips to keep pests out of your house:

  • Trim all branches eight to 10 feet from the house so animals cannot jump from a tree to the roof.

  • Install a chimney cap and secure it tightly to keep raccoons from setting up residency.

  • Fix damaged screens in roof, soffit, and gable vents.

  • Keep bird feeders 15 feet from the house; store birdseed and pet food in sealed containers.

  • Keep the woodpile away from the house; mice can start families in it and then decide to move into your house.

  • Seal around dryer vents and other gaps in the foundation and siding.
